Weaning can feel like a mix of excitement and “What on earth do I feed this tiny human now?” If you’re anything like me, you probably find yourself standing in the kitchen staring at your fridge thinking, “Can they eat that? Is this mashable? Will they actually like it?”
Don’t worry — I’ve been there. So today I’m sharing a few of my go-to organic snack ideas that are baby-friendly, healthy, and (the best part) super simple. These are great for babies around 6 months and up, depending on where they are on their weaning journey.
Let’s dive in
1. Mashed Avocado on Toast Fingers
Avocado is like the MVP of baby snacks. Packed with healthy fats and a lovely soft texture, it’s perfect for little ones. I just mash up half an organic avocado and spread it on a slice of soft, wholegrain toast. Then cut it into finger-sized strips. That’s it. Bonus: babies LOVE squishing it between their fingers (sorry in advance for the mess).
2. Banana Oat Bites
These are ridiculously easy. Mash up a ripe banana, mix in some organic oats, and bake little blobs in the oven for about 10–12 minutes at 180°C. They come out soft and chewy — perfect for little gums. You can even add a pinch of cinnamon for flavour. I usually make a batch and keep them for a couple of days.
3. Steamed Carrot and Sweet Potato Sticks
Peel, chop, steam. That’s the whole recipe. These veggie sticks are great for baby-led weaning. They’re naturally sweet, soft to chew, and packed with nutrients. I sometimes sprinkle a tiny bit of cinnamon or mild paprika for a fun twist.
4. Mini Rice Cakes with Nut Butter
Go for plain, unsalted organic rice cakes — the baby-sized ones. Add a smear of smooth peanut butter or almond butter (make sure there’s no added sugar or salt). Just keep an eye for allergies if it’s your first time introducing nuts. These are perfect for on-the-go snacking too.
5. Apple and Pear Purée Pops
This one’s a fun way to soothe teething gums. Just cook down some peeled apples and pears until soft, then blend into a smooth purée. Pour into mini silicone moulds and freeze. Instant fruit pops! It’s like a little treat, but still healthy and sugar-free.
6. Chia Pudding (Baby Style)
This one feels a bit fancy, but it’s SO easy. Mix a couple of tablespoons of organic chia seeds with oat milk or breast milk/formula. Let it sit in the fridge for a few hours or overnight until it thickens. You can add a spoon of fruit purée for flavour. It’s like a baby dessert that’s actually good for them.
A Few Quick Tips:
- Always keep an eye on your baby while they’re eating.
- Go slow with new ingredients, especially potential allergens.
- Embrace the mess. Weaning is supposed to be a little wild!
I hope these snack ideas make your weaning journey a little easier — and a lot more fun. If you try any of them, let me know how your baby likes them (and whether most of it made it into their mouth 😅).
Happy snacking!
